Rutile is an impure, yet important form of titanium containing iron oxide, traces of chromium and vanadium oxides. Used in clay bodies, engobes, and glazes giving the colors of ivory through yellows to dark tan according to amount used. In amounts over 4% it breaks up the colors and surfaces, gives matte, and crystal finish. Amounts over 6% can produce broken warm blues.
